Au Sable River Property Owners Association (ARPOA)
History
- The Au Sable River Property Owners Association (ARPOA) was founded in 1978 to provide an organization for local residents to become active in preserving and protecting the qualities of the Au Sable River system.
- The ARPOA was organized "To preserve, protect and enhance the area's great endowments of scenery, water, and land habitat for wild fish and game; and to accomplish those ends by education, motivation and mobilization of individuals, public and private organizations and governmental agencies."
- The ARPOA is an active partner in the Au Sable River Restoration Committee, which is correcting soil erosion sites caused by past erosion.
- The ARPOA also monitors the impact of oil and gas development on the Au Sable River watershed.
- ARPOA is the key in the organization of and financing of the River Patrol, which controls rowdyism and abuse on the mainstream, south branch of the Au Sable River and the upper Manistee River.
- ARPOA had involvement in development of the Grayling Township and Grayling City Master Plan with input in its wording to protect the environment.
- The ARPOA board has written letters this year to serve your best interest:
- To Michigan State Senators to oppose pending Senate Bill 429 which threatens to dilute the Natural Rivers Act and possibly affect the Au Sable River.
- To the Grayling Township Board to encourage consideration for partial funding of a police officer dedicated to serving Grayling Township. (in cooperative effort with Crawford County and supported in part by a federal grant)
- To support a grant request by the Griffith Foundation to assist in their initiative for Stormwater Runoff Assessment from the City of Grayling into the Au Sable River.
- To oppose the North Branch Associations proposal to plant trout in the North Branch without scienfifice assurance that it would not cause harm to the Au Sable River System fishery.
- ARPOA has distributed hundreds of "Au Sable River Riparian Use & Owners" pamphlets (mostly through local real estate offices to new property owners) with information on Natural River Zoning and Regulations and handy information on minimizing impact on the river.
- ARPOA is involved, through our members Bernie Fowler and George Alexander, with proper care of trees that fall in the river. (clearing a way for canoe traffic, but maintaining naturalness using the trunks for fish cover)
- The ARPOA sponsors an award at Grayling High School for best student environmental
project or paper.
We need more of our members to help with this important work and we need your ideas and comments. Please join our Association.
