Au Sable River Riparian Use & Ownership Guide
Burning Regulations
- Since this is "forest fire" country any burning on private property must be controlled to protect neighboring property from wildfire.
- Burning of household trash and yard debris is discouraged, but allowed if it is done in an approved incineration container. (Containers of masonry or metal with a metal covering device with openings no larger than ¾ inch. Area of 10 feet diameter must be cleared around the incinerator with a water hose or water buckets available.)
- Natural composting is encouraged. Local townships have disposal areas available for yard debris.
- Any "open burning" requires a burning permit, except when there is snow on the ground.
- Phone numbers to call for burning permits:
Crawford Country 989-348-6371
Roscommon Country 989-275-8512
Otsego County 989-732-3541
- Make certain that your fire is dead before you leave it.
- Do not burn demolition lumber or milled lumber pieces nor burn materials that emit noxious odors.
